Shavasana is one of the supine postures in yoga. It translates into English as the "Corpse Posture".

At first sight or introduction to shavasana people commonly think advertly - "Oh come on! I know how to lie down!" However, this posture is about precision in spinal and limb alignment and conscious relaxation, which is not as simple as it looks.

It is an excellent asana for relaxation as it relaxes the entire psycho-physiological system. It is normally performed after and in between all other asanas, before sleep, during yoga nidra and whenever the body/mind needs rest.

Lie down, flat on the back with the arms slightly away from the body, palms of hands facing upwards.

Allow fingers to relax, aiming to release any tension.

Comfortably adjust the feet slightly apart and close the eyes.

The head and spine should be straight.

Aim to stay completely still, without moving a muscle.

Consciously relax the whole body and stop all physical movement.

Become aware of the natural breath.
